Free the orca

Slide 2 As the topic “if we should close zoo or not” has been brought up for too many times,so I ‘m just going to focus on one typical creature – the orca.

I’m sure that all of us have seen the marine mammals’ show-dolphins, sea lions, beluga etc.

Many of you probably felt excited about watching these showsevery time, that’s exactly how I felt when I was little. However, today  I’m actually going to discuss why we shouldfree the orcas.

Slide 3 Orca, often refers to another common name – killer whale, is a toothed whale thatbelongs to the oceanic dolphin family. They are one of the most successfulpredators in the world.

Male orcas can grow up to about 7 to 9 meters and weighedmore than 6 tonnes, and female orcas are generally smaller which weighed about3 to 4 tonnes and grow up to 6 to 8 meters.

Slide 4 Unnaturalenvironment – sea water with chemicals in it

Only two pools in Seaworld, Orlando are deeper than Tilikum(who is the largest killer whale in captivity and has body length of 6.9meters).

Unnatural diets

Slide 5 Killerwhales have very strong family bonds between a pod. Younger whales will usuallylive with their moms for entire life. They are very sociable creatures.

In seaworld, killer whales are forced to live with othersthat are not from the same pod, which can cause confliction between each other.

Slide 6 The firstorca show was held at 1965 by Shamu, a young female killer whale, her motherwas killed in front of her eyes.

Only young orcas will be captured, which is a permanentdamage for the pod as the youths are their future.

Slide 7 In wild, orcas choose their own mate. In captivity, they are forced to breed. And oftenat younger age – Katina was forced to breed at 9 and has to breed on a regularbasis, when orcas in the wild usually having their first calf around 14-15, andbreed once about every 5 years. She is about 39 years old now and already hadseven children.

Slide 8 Orcas incaptivity are usually under both mental and physical pressure due to small sizeof the tanks, the noises from people etc.

Killer whales would try to release the pressure or try tofind some fun by biting on the iron bars or concrete which then would breaktheir teeth or result in painful dental problems.

Slide 9 Orcas inthe wild will have average life expectancy for 30-50 years, maximum 60-70 formales and 80-over 100 for females.

Mean life expectancy for whales in captivity, only 9.

Slide 10 Orcas inthe wild do not usually attack human, there were only several attacks and onlyone recorded was fatal.

Over 120 attacks from orcas in captivity, and more than 4were fatal. Tilikum, only himself, resulted three fatal attacks (one was withtwo other whales).

Slide 11 100% Collapseddorsal fins in captivity, 1% in wild

Slide 12 Wild orcasswim up to 100 miles a day, the tank to them is like bathtub.

Slide 13 Wild orcasdo similar things compared to what they do in captivity

Slide 14 Say NO to seaworld, tell people you know that areplanning to go to see the shows about the cruelty behind them.
